    Wigner--Dyson statistics for a class of integrable models

    We construct an ensemble of second--quantized Hamiltonians with two bosonic degrees of freedom, whose members display with probability one GOE or GUE statistics. Nevertheless, these Hamiltonians have a second integral of motion, namely the boson number, and thus are integrable. To construct this ensemble we use some ``reverse engineering'' starting from the fact that nn--bosons in a two--level system with random interactions have an integrable classical limit by the old Heisenberg association of boson operators to actions and angles. By choosing an nn--body random interaction and degenerate levels we end up with GOE or GUE Hamiltonians. Ergodicity of these ensembles completes the example.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figur

    Scheme for Attophysics Experiments at a X-ray SASE FEL

    We propose a concept for production of high power coherent attosecond pulses in X-ray range. An approach is based on generation of 8th harmonic of radiation in a multistage HGHG FEL (high gain high harmonic free electron laser) configuration starting from shot noise. Single-spike phenomena occurs when electron bunch is passed through the sequence of four relatively short undulators. The first stage is a conventional "long" wavelength (0.8 nm) SASE FEL which operates in the high-gain linear regime. The 0.1 nm wavelength range is reached by successive multiplication (0.8 nm →\to 0.4 nm →\to 0.2 nm →\to 0.1 nm) in a stage sequence. Our study shows that the statistical properties of the high-harmonic radiation from the SASE FEL, operating in linear regime, can be used for selection of radiation pulses with a single spike in time domain. The duration of the spikes is in attosecond range. Selection of single-spike high-harmonic pulses is achieved by using a special trigger in data acquisition system. The potential of X-ray SASE FEL at TESLA at DESY for generating attosecond pulses is demonstrated. Since the design of XFEL laboratory at TESLA is based on the use of long SASE undulators with tunable gap, no special place nor additional FEL undulators are required for attophysics experiments. The use of a 10 GW-level attosecond X-ray pulses at X-ray SASE FEL facility will enable us to track processes inside atoms.Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Optics Communication

    Perturbative Formulation and Non-adiabatic Corrections in Adiabatic Quantum Computing Schemes

    Adiabatic limit is the presumption of the adiabatic geometric quantum computation and of the adiabatic quantum algorithm. But in reality, the variation speed of the Hamiltonian is finite. Here we develop a general formulation of adiabatic quantum computing, which accurately describes the evolution of the quantum state in a perturbative way, in which the adiabatic limit is the zeroth-order approximation. As an application of this formulation, non-adiabatic correction or error is estimated for several physical implementations of the adiabatic geometric gates. A quantum computing process consisting of many adiabatic gate operations is considered, for which the total non-adiabatic error is found to be about the sum of those of all the gates.     Magnetically-trapped atoms in Bose-Einstein condensates are spin polarized. Since the magnetic field is inhomogeneous, the atoms aquire Berry phases of the Aharonov-Bohm type during adiabatic motion. In the presence of an eletric field there is an additional Aharonov-Casher effect. Taking into account the limitations on the strength of the electric fields due to the polarizability of the atoms, we investigate the extent to which these effects can be used to induce rotation in a Bose-Einstein condensate.Comment: 5 pages, 2 ps figures, RevTe

    What is a picture worth? A primer for coding and interpreting photographic data

    Society is becoming increasingly image based. As individuals regularly record moments both mundane and momentous, images potentially lose or gain power to communicate important information. Social work scholars have argued that social work should incorporate images into both interventions (Chapman and Hall, 2016; Chapman et al., 2014) and research (Marshal et al., 2009). A recent review provides an overview of visual methodologies in social work (Clark and Morriss, 2015). The most popular means of doing this has been through the incorporation of Photovoice (Wang and Burris, 1997) into the social work research repertoire. Yet, in Photovoice, although images are central, text remains the unit of analysis. This paper aims to augment the existing literature in social work by focusing on ways in which images can be data in and of themselves and how image-based data interact with text-based data. We will begin with ethical considerations, proceed to step-by-step instructions for coding and analyzing image-based data in ATLAS.ti, and finally discuss interpretation. A case example drawing on a visually based project originally conducted with in-country Chinese migrant mothers will illustrate the outlined methods

    Potent inhibitory activity of chimeric oligonucleotides targeting two different sites of human telomerase

    Suppression of telomerase activity in tumor cells has been considered as a new anticancer strategy. Here, we present chimeric oligonucleotides (chimeric ODNs) as a new type of telomerase inhibitor that contains differently modified oligomers to address two different sites of telomerase: the RNA template and a suggested protein motif. We have shown previously that phosphorothioate-modified oligonucleotides (PS ODNs) interact in a length-dependent rather than in a sequence-dependent manner, presumably with the protein part of the primer-binding site of telomerase, causing strong inhibition of telomerase. In the present study, we demonstrate that extensions of these PS ODNs at their 3'-ends with an antisense oligomer partial sequence covering 11 bases of the RNA template cause significantly increased inhibitory activity, with IC(50) values between 0.60 and 0.95 nM in a Telomeric Repeat Amplification Protocol (TRAP) assay based on U-87 cell lysates. The enhanced inhibitory activity is observed regardless of whether the antisense part is modified (phosphodiester, PO; 2'-O-methylribosyl, 2'-OMe/PO; phosphoramidate, PAM). However, inside intact U-87 cells, these modifications of the antisense part proved to be essential for efficient telomerase inhibition 20 hours after transfection. In particular, the chimeric ODNs containing PAM or 2'-OMe/PO modifications, when complexed with lipofectin, were most efficient telomerase inhibitors (ID(50) = 0.04 and 0.06 microM, respectively). In conclusion, ODNs of this new type emerged as powerful inhibitors of human telomerase and are, therefore, promising candidates for further investigations of the anticancer strategy of telomerase inhibition

    Welfare participation and depression among youth in the United States: A systematic review

    Welfare programs play important roles in the lives of vulnerable populations. However, since their inception, welfare programs have been accompanied by contentious debate about their impact on the wellbeing of participants and, hence, about their collective value as a strategy for alleviating poverty. This study uses welfare participation as a marker of lower socioeconomic status to identify and synthesize the relationship between welfare participation and depression among youth. A systematic review was undertaken based on literature published between 1997 and 2017 through a search of 9 electronic databases, 15 reports met criteria for study inclusion. Four descriptive studies reported mixed findings. Of the 11 comparison studies, 10 studies showed consistent findings that participation in welfare programs was associated with a higher vulnerability for depression. Discussion includes the effects of stigma related to welfare and mental health treatment, and the implications for policy makers, social workers, and future research

    Household Assets, the Role of Government Assistance, and Depression Among Low-Income Families in Shanghai

    As China’s economy is rapidly changing from a planned to a capitalist economy, many families find themselves financially struggling. In some cases, conflicting values and attitudes may contribute to mental health challenges such as depression that would lead to further feelings of helplessness and immobilization. Using a random sample of 1006 low-income households from Pudong District of Shanghai, China, this study aims to examine the relationships between household assets, beliefs about government as the primary way to improve economic circumstances and self-reported depressive symptoms. In addition, this study investigates the mediation effects of beliefs that government is the best change agent for improved life circumstances on the relationship between household assets and depression. We found those who indicated that government was the main means for attaining a better life had significantly higher depression levels whereas higher numbers of household assets were associated with lower depression levels. We also found that viewing government as the most important change agent only partially mediated the relationship between household assets and depression (p <.001). Findings from this study support anti-poverty policies and social work related practice initiatives aimed at assisting low income families in China, in particular the need to address psychological as well as economic needs

    Abelian Magnetic Monopole Dominance in Quark Confinement

    We prove Abelian magnetic monopole dominance in the string tension of QCD. Abelian and monopole dominance in low energy physics of QCD has been confirmed for various quantities by recent Monte Carlo simulations of lattice gauge theory. In order to prove this dominance, we use the reformulation of continuum Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge as a deformation of a topological field theory of magnetic monopoles, which was proposed in the previous article by the author. This reformulation provides an efficient way for incorporating the magnetic monopole configuration as a topological non-trivial configuration in the functional integral. We derive a version of the non-Abelian Stokes theorem and use it to estimate the expectation value of the Wilson loop. This clearly exhibits the role played by the magnetic monopole as an origin of the Berry phase in the calculation of the Wilson loop in the manifestly gauge invariant manner. We show that the string tension derived from the diagonal (abelian) Wilson loop in the topological field theory (studied in the previous article) converges to that of the full non-Abelian Wilson loop in the limit of large Wilson loop. Therefore, within the above reformulation of QCD, this result (together with the previous result) completes the proof of quark confinement in QCD based on the criterion of the area law of the full non-Abelian Wilson loop.Comment: 33 pages, Latex, no figures, version accepted for publication in Phys.
